Self-Portrait/Self-Portrait with Material  (2010)

In 2010, I created a work for a series of public interventions lead by Bill Dietz for Ensemble Zwischentöne & the 35 Megaphones of Otto Beck's “Orchester für Direkte Demokratie.” The series was called “I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY AND I AM SAYING IT,” and commissioned works were presented every Saturday between November 13th - December 11th, 2010, at 3pm on the Schloßplatz, Berlin. For my contribution to Bill's “Samstagsdemonstrationen Neuer Musik,” I requested that participant-megaphonists bring their own “material” in the form of personal or published texts, and simultaneously declaim them with the bell of the megaphone flush against the four available surfaces of the Schlossplatz: wood, concrete, earth and metal. The output of their “material,” modulated by these “material” obstructions, was accompanied by a series of long tones performed on trombone and trumpet. The piece had a second performance in the SPOR Festival in Aarhus Denmark in 2012, and a new version in October 2020 on the eve of the presidential elections in the US, in New York, on Governor’s Island, under the aegis of the contemporary music platform Qubit.
